Rock a Hula, Rock, Rock a Hula

Haven’t done a cocktail recipe in awhile – yes, I’ve been slacking.  I figure this would be a good one in celebration of spring and Mother’s Day coming up.  Seems like a cool kind of tiki type drink and I like those.  This one not only sounds tasty but looks oh so pretty.  Makes me miss Hawaii.  *sigh*

Twilight

twilightSo I caved in and decided to jump on the Twilight bandwagon.  I have not seen the movie or read any of the books.  A long time ago I had seen it in the book store and it did catch my eye but then never thought about it again till all the hype.

So just picked up the first book Twilight in the series from the library and will start reading pretty soon.  Anyone want to join me?  I kind of miss doing my old Downtown Chick Chat book club posts with my blog readers.

Overreacting?

So I have only been getting bits and pieces here and there on this swine flu.  We have cases here and they are kids and so they are closing down the schools.  Uh…. closing down the schools?  Reporting it on the news every night?  People wearing masks and scared?  Why?  I mean isn’t this just another type of flu that is basically pretty similar to the regular flu we have?  Chills, fever, body aches, etc. etc.

So what’s with all the panic here?  Yes good to stay informed and it would definitely suck to get this but it just seems like people are overreacting here.  Someone told me, “Well it’s because people have DIED in Mexico from it!”  Uh… well… people die from the regular flu each year too.  People who are weak, elder, have other medical complications or who don’t go to the doctor, etc. etc.

Am I just missing something here?

Beauty Blog

I have set up a new blog outside of this one that will focus more on beauty, products, tips and tricks, etc.  Since I was doing more posts about it I figured I would just do a separate blog on it and not bog this one down with that topic.

I’m having fun with it and I have actually wanted to do this for a long time.  Gives me a good and positive hobby.  I already transferred some of the posts from this blog to that one.

If you are interested in checking it out drop me a note and I’ll give you the web address for it.  I’m guessing only chicks will be interested since it will be beauty talk only on that bloggy poo.

Getting Worse

I checked in with the HR guy of that pending corporate trainer job.  He told me he knows about as much as me.  He said things seem to be on hold from the higher ups and he is guessing and only guessing on a hunch, that he thinks they may be trying to bring someone in internally for the position from another call center out of state.  I’m livid of course.  This seems to keep happening with the very few people I interview with.  Why oh why are employers doing this????  There are zillions of people UNEMPLOYED!  Please help the economy and save a persons life – hire the unemployed (who are qualified and good candidates of course).

The guy said he was only speculating this was going on.  He said not to quote him but just going on suspicion.  He could be handing me a line of bull but judging from his tone and what he said, I don’t think he was.  He seemed irritated by it actually and said, “If they are doing this, I don’t know why they are because we went through this whole process of interviewing and screening some good candidates who clearly want to work here and now we have to hold out and cater to someone who might not even be crazy about moving to Phoenix.”

So of course I’m bummed.  It’s really unfortunate that employers are continuing to do this when there are sooooooo many qualified and eager people out of work.  Of course I haven’t stopped looking and applying for other jobs all during this, but not getting any bites.  So this is a real huge disappointment.  I know I shouldn’t give up hope because there is still a chance they could call me and offer me the job but… sounds to me like the Regional Training Manager may want to bring in someone who already works for him in one of the other out of state call centers.  They probably get on well or he likes the persons work or whatever and I can understand that.  It’s just obvious again people who are not effected directly by what is going on have no clue how really bad it is and how life and death it is to us out of work right now.

I actually had the local news on tonight and they said that over 4000 applicants turned out for jobs at In and Out Burger.  They also talked about some job fair and were talking with professional people like myself who have been out of work 6 months to a year.  The only comfort in this is knowing I’m not alone.  That there are very qualified, professional people out there who can’t find work.  That I’m not crazy.  That it’s not just me.  Of course I’m not comforted by the fact that these people are struggling like me and out of work for so long though.

I wish companies would start hiring.  But it seems to be a catch 22.  I heard a hotel here in the valley is closing it’s doors because it is just not getting the business.  Well that’s because people are out of work.  People out of work – can’t spend money in businesses – business then have to lay off more and shut down and on and on and on.  Ugly cycle that seems to get worse.  I had said a long time ago it will get worse before it gets better and it is certainly happening.

All I can do is keep praying, keep the faith and continue the hunt to the best of my ability.  If you are an employer reading this with hiring power, please hire the unemployed before transfers and promotions within your company.  That can resume when times are better.  Help someone put food on the table.  There are so many awesome and qualified people out there who are so eager to work for you and do a great job.

Thieving Senior Citizens

This topic has come up quite a bit around me lately.  At work I was asked to go into the beauty/health department and help them count the merchandise on the shelves and record the numbers.  Uh.. yeah, not my job but I won’t go into that.  Of course there were items that the numbers/count didn’t match.  The lady in that department told me theft is high in our store.  That floors me since it’s such a cheap store and there are cameras.

Then not a few days later before I started my shift I had missed the excitement of one of the cashiers being fired for theft.  This woman was in her 70’s for crying out loud.  I guess she was stealing the snacks by the register, hiding them under the register and munching on them during shift.  There are cameras above each register so that’s how she got caught.  I wonder how long she had been doing it before getting caught.

Then last night at my parents house (they live in Sun City) my dad was talking about theft.  He said he and a few buddies were out golfing and I guess someone came along and took his friends golf balls off their golf cart.  He was pissed and I can’t blame him.  My dad told me he was talking to the people in the CVS store and they said that theft is rampant in Sun City.  He also told me some other store stopped putting candy, hats, sunglasses, etc. in a certain area because of so much theft.  Wow.  All these old geezers are stealing everything that isn’t nailed down!  What’s with that?  That really surprises me.  But I guess if some of them are living on a small social security check alone, then maybe I can see why they are doing it.  Or if you are getting paid barely above minimum wage at my store.  lol

Not sure why I’m surprised, theft is theft no matter what age.  I guess I just didn’t expect senior citizens to be doing it.  Teenagers and young adults I can see but seniors?
